Oxygen Equipment

Using Oxygen at Home

There are many types of oxygen delivery systems that are suitable for in-home use. Choosing the right equipment is important to ensure that an individual’s therapeutic and lifestyle needs are met. A Medigas respiratory therapist or nurse will help to make this choice simpler.

Oxygen Concentrator

An oxygen concentrator is an electronically powered unit that produces its own oxygen by pulling room air into a collecting chamber and then filtering out the oxygen. It requires no refill and will continue to create oxygen as long as it is plugged in and turned on.

Portable Oxygen Concentrator

A portable oxygen concentrator is a smaller version of the standard oxygen concentrator. It is lightweight, simple to use and is moved with ease. It can be run from an electrical wall outlet or by battery. All clients who plan to use a portable oxygen concentrator are first assessed by a Medigas respiratory therapist or nurse to make sure this unit meets their body’s needs.

Oxygen Cylinder

A cylinder contains oxygen gas under pressure. Oxygen cylinders, sometimes referred to as oxygen tanks, are available in a variety of sizes and are primarily used to provide portable oxygen for use while away from home. They can also serve as a back up to an oxygen concentrator.

Liquid Oxygen

Liquid oxygen is stored in thermos-like containers called reservoirs. The liquid converts into a gas before it leaves the reservoir, making it ready for you to breathe in. Liquid oxygen requires no electrical power and portable units are designed for you to fill from the reservoir. The liquid reservoir is refilled by a Medigas service representative.
